What is Plusnet broadband?
Plusnet is known for offering some of the cheapest broadband deals on the market and provides a variety of packages to suit each household. The company was set up in Sheffield in 1997 and was acquired by BT in 2007, but it’s operated as a separate business, so often its broadband deals are quite different from BT’s. Plusnet launched its fibre broadband service in 2012, and it also provides broadband for John Lewis broadband.
Like most of the UK’s broadband providers, Plusnet runs its services across the Openreach broadband network. As a result, switching to Plusnet broadband should be a pretty seamless process, unless you don’t already have a phone line or are switching from Virgin Media, which runs on its own, separate network. What does Plusnet broadband offer?
Plusnet supplies a free router with its broadband packages, but there’s usually a £5 activation charge for it. All packages can be bundled with a home phone, but there is also the option for broadband-only. Plusnet doesn’t offer TV bundles.
- Plusnet ADSL broadband – Plusnet’s ADSL package offers average speeds of 10Mbps, and like the fibre broadband deals, it can be bundled with a home phone – or not.
- Plusnet fibre broadband – There are two flavours of Plusnet fibre broadband: Unlimited Fibre, with average speeds of 36Mbps, and Unlimited Fibre Extra, with average speeds of 66 Mbps.
- Plusnet business packages – Plusnet also offers a variety of business broadband packages, offering the same speeds but different features and extras from its home broadband packages. These include a static IP address, free web domains and email addresses, and a high level of technical support. You can check out our review of Plusnet business broadbandright here.
Why choose Plusnet broadband?
- Cheap broadband packages – With low prices (starting from £19 per month) and fibre optic speeds averaging 66Mbps with the top-end package, Plusnet offers excellent value for money.
- Choice of broadband only – If you don’t want to pay for a call plan, Plusnet is one of only a few providers to offer a broadband only package, with a choice of either standard or fibre services.
- Plusnet Reward Card – You can sometimes find broadband deals offered with a Plusnet Reward Card (£75 value), which can be spent online or at most high street shops that accept Mastercard. However, there are a few restrictions: for example, the Reward Card can’t be used to withdraw cash or for gambling.
- 12-month contracts – Plusnet offers relatively short 12-month contracts, as opposed to the 18-month or 24-month contracts offered by many other providers. The company also offers month-to-month contracts for customers that don’t want to get locked in for a long period.
- Unlimited usage on all packages – All Plusnet’s residential packages come with unlimited usage, so there will be nothing to limit your online fun.
- A UK-based customer service team – Plusnet provides customer service between 8am and 8pm on Monday, 8am and 7pm on Saturday, and 9am and 6pm on Sunday, and its offices are based in the UK. It has also been formally recognised for its support services and has won many customer service awards.
