Why choose Sky broadband?

A large and popular provider with a long history of great service, Sky internet is a great choice for many reasons.

The brand offers competitive average speeds for both their standard and fibre service, and service is truly unlimited with most packages. It also consistently scores highly in customer satisfaction surveys and offers arguably the best combined TV and broadband bundles on the UK market.

As with any provider, there are some downsides to signing up with Sky. Installation costs can be expensive with some packages, for example, and their fibre service has limited availability across the country - particularly with the highest speeds.

Broadband speeds

There are five different Sky broadband packages to choose from, each with a different average download speed.

• Broadband Essential is a basic broadband package with average speeds of 11Mbps and unlimited monthly usage. It’s ideal for smaller households or those on a restricted budget who aren’t heavy internet users.
• Broadband Superfast 35 is the most recently introduced Sky broadband package, offering average speeds of 36Mbps and uploads of around 9Mbps. It's kind of an entry-level fibre optic service, and a good way of getting reasonably speeds, without busting the bank.
• Broadband Superfast is the most popular fibre broadband package with average speeds of 59Mbps and unlimited monthly usage. You can turn the deal into a bundle by adding Sky TV and landline calls, if wished, or keep it as a broadband only deal with pay as you go calls.
• Broadband Ultrafast has a really fast average speed of 145Mbps, making it 12x quicker than the their basic offer. It’s ideal for uploading large content, live streaming and online gaming, all without disrupting the rest of a large household Sky Ultrafast is being rolled out across the UK but is currently only available to less than 20% of households.
• Broadband Ultrafast Plus is Sky's fastest ever broadband, using fibre to the premises technology (FTTP) to deliver average downloads of around 500Mbps – not long ago the stuff of dreams for most people. Ideal for almost everything, with pretty much no downside other than the cost. You can find faster, but it's unlikely you'd need to.

Prices and costs

Sky certainly isn’t the UK’s cheapest broadband provider, but the quality of the provision, great speeds and good customer service make it worth the additional spend for some customers. Sky broadband packages start from £23 per month. Here's a quick overview of the most popular packages and prices:

Contract lengths

Sky has a minimum contract term of 18 months, and doesn’t offer short-term broadband contracts on a rolling, month to month basis.

If you cancel part-way through a contract, you’ll have to pay an early exit fee, so it’s best not to sign up for a deal when you know you might have to cancel within the minimum term - perhaps if you want to move house or you’re a student living in temporary accommodation.

Packages and bundles

Sky offers both standalone broadband and a number of combined bundles.

Broadband only

As with most UK providers, Sky offers their broadband on its own. You’ll need a landline connection and if you make any calls, these will be charged on a pay as you go basis.

Broadband and phone

All Sky broadband and phone packages include a landline telephone service - even if you don’t use it for voice calls.

If you do use a landline phone regularly, it’s worth adding a call package with free inclusive calls instead of paying individually for every call you make. The brand has some great deals on offer, including free evening, weekend or anytime calls.

Broadband and TV

As you’d expect, you’ll find a great range of broadband and TV bundle options. With an 18 month contract as standard, you can choose from over 300 channels to suit the interests of your household, from sports to shopping. For total convenience, some customers go for combined broadband, TV and landline phone provision from Sky. The brand has some great deals available with inclusive landline calling and a premium TV package.

Installation process and what to expect

Installing most of the services from the provider should be pretty straightforward. This is especially true if you already have an active phone line (which is the case with most households). You can also usually self-install your broadband with the need for an engineer to visit your property.

If you’ve chosen a deal that includes Sky TV services, you’ll need to book an engineer visit to install the necessary equipment.

The ISP charges an upfront installation fee for new contracts, which is normally around £20 to £40, depending on what package you’ve signed up for. Broadband only deals are usually cheaper to set up than TV packages. Make sure you check what installation costs will be before signing on the dotted line.

What router will I get?

When you sign up with the provider, they’ll send you a router so you can get hooked up to the service. The package you choose will determine the router you’re sent.

Sky broadband hub: All of the providers current packages comes with the Sky Hub router, which is the latest device available and a considerable improvement on the previous models. One of the best features is the improved WiFi reception throughout the home.
